Welcome to The 10p Gamer Channel, where we do things differently. Our focus is on playing with low stakes and real money, giving you an honest look at the true ups and downs of gambling. With over 20 years of experience in both online and offline gambling, I’ve seen the industry evolve from simple three-reel slots in local pubs to today’s complex online games packed with features and unlimited paylines!
As the games have changed, so too have the rules. The UK Gambling Commission has introduced a range of regulations aimed at protecting players, but in practice, many of these rules have had unintended—and sometimes counterproductive—effects. Let’s take a closer look at the main restrictions in place today, how they impact your gameplay, and what we think could be improved.
Spin Delay
One of the most noticeable changes is the mandatory 2.5-second delay between spins. The idea was to slow down gameplay and reduce intensity, but in reality, it often leads to frustration. Many players, annoyed by the slow pace, end up increasing their bet size to keep things exciting—potentially spending more than they intended. Instead of making gambling safer, this rule can actually encourage riskier behaviour.
Removal of Autoplay
Since October 31, 2021, autoplay has been banned on UK slots. The reasoning was that autoplay made it harder for players to keep track of time and spending. However, evidence from operators suggested that autoplay actually helped many players manage their sessions responsibly. Without it, players are more likely to raise their bets to finish sessions faster and avoid repetitive clicking—again, a change that seems to benefit operators more than players.
Bonus Buy Restrictions
Bonus buys let players pay to access a slot’s bonus round directly. For example, on Sweet Bonanza, the minimum bonus buy costs £20. While we agree that high-stakes bonus buys can be risky and support affordability checks, the outright ban has pushed some players towards unregulated or crypto casinos to access these features. This shift to less regulated environments can increase the risks for players, making the ban somewhat counterproductive.
Bet Size Limits
In April 2025, new rules were introduced to limit bet sizes based on age: under-25s can’t bet more than £2 per spin, while those 25 and over are capped at £5 per spin. While limiting stakes can help, it’s odd that these restrictions only apply to slots and not to higher-risk games like poker or roulette. The inconsistency raises questions about the effectiveness of these measures.
Missed Opportunities
Many of the UK Gambling Commission’s rules seem disconnected from the realities of modern gambling. While they focus on restrictions that often benefit casinos, they fall short on real player protections—such as resolving withdrawal disputes or addressing unfair bonus offers. It’s concerning that casinos can ban players under the guise of “Safer Gambling,” withhold funds, and provide no explanation, while the Commission remains unresponsive.
Instead of just capping maximum bets, why not encourage lower minimum stakes? Allowing bets from as little as 1p would let more people play comfortably and responsibly. Mandating lower-value coin options could make a real difference in player safety.
Responsible Gambling: Our Top Tips
No matter what the rules are, the most important thing is to keep your gambling fun and under control. Here are our top tips:
- Take Breaks: If you’re frustrated or the fun stops, step away for a while. A break can help you regain perspective.
- Keep Stakes Low: Lower stakes mean longer playtime and less risk of big losses.
- Play for Enjoyment, Not Profit: Treat slots as entertainment, not a way to make money. Wins are a bonus, not a guarantee.
- Withdraw When You Win: If you get a good win, consider withdrawing some or all of your winnings. Enjoy your success!
- Set Limits: Use deposit, loss, and session limits to help you stay in control.
At The 10p Gamer Channel, we’re committed to honest, low-stakes play and helping you make the most of your gaming experience. Remember: play smart, play safe, and always play for fun.
